I can remember very often when I would be obsessing about color, you know, trying to get it right. To me, it's like breathing. It's like I'm taking in oxygen. I'm taking in my wonderful view of color in the world. If I'm feeling ill or depressed, if you shove me into a garden full of color, I revive. I mean, I just, it's life-enhancing for me the whole thing of color. And that's why I like lots of it around me. I think my art has turned into an exploration of color. But I think I've learned more about color through working with textiles than I ever learned as a painter. And my, if my paintings are interesting and colorful now, it's because of textiles. It's because of taking baskets full of yarn and taking away the ones that were distracting and adding more of the juicy ones, building up a sexy pallet that made my paintings kind of come alive. I'm realizing that certain yarns have a capacity to show color wonderfully. So I'm still always obsessed about color. Color can lift a surface, can absolutely transform a piece. What makes color really work is proportion. And proportion comes through pattern. If you get it right, the pattern just sings. And of course, patterns become very important for relaying color. And it's why I spend my life playing with patterns and knitwear and patchwork. It is like an emotional charge that I get from an interesting arrangement of color. Lift your spirit. It's possible to do it with color. It's probably one of the most powerful forces for lifting a spirit. I just love color.
